Welcome to the Lomax Geo-Archive, a project designed to provide access to the thousands of sound recordings of Alan Lomax, beginning with Lomax's first recordings onto (newly invented) tape in 1946 and tracing his career into the 1990s. In addition to a wide spectrum of musical performances from around the world, it includes stories, jokes, sermons, personal narratives, and interviews conducted by Lomax and his associates. This material from Alan Lomax's independent archive is distinct from the thousands of earlier recordings on acetate and aluminum discs he made from 1933 to 1942 under the auspices of the Library of Congress. The Lomax Geo-Archive is an interactive map that provides you access to the field recordings in the location they were recorded. Microphone markers provide you information about the location and the cassette icons will reveal the sessions of actual field recordings. In 1960, Alan stated that, "It still remains for us to learn how we can put our magnificent mass communications technology at the service of each and every branch of the human family." It is our hope that the Lomax Geo Archive will give everyone greater access to the sounds and songs of this epic collection. |
